If you’ve been here a while, you know my sister, some girlfriends and I have been going to Martha’s Vineyard every summer for the last handful of years. While we have a lot of traditions we stick to every year, we do try to mix it up with some new activities.
Our 8th annual trip started fairly similar to those in the past. We took the first ferry of the morning from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard, grabbed breakfast #1 at a local convenience store and deli, then headed over to The Grey Barn for breakfast #2. After buying some treats there, we headed to the beach to kill time before we could check into the house for the weekend. We settled in for the afternoon and made our traditional first night Mexican dinner of tacos, guacamole and margaritas!

On Sunday morning, a few of us got up early for a quick run on the bike trail before heading to the beach for a few hours of lounging. It was fun going to the beach with my big zoom lens and camera so I could practice my photographer, especially with all the birds. The beach we go to had a few osprey nests around, so we got to see a family of osprey with their last chick (who was full grown at this point) before it left the nest. For our second night, we did another themed dinner – a Southern Charm kind of vibe – we made fried chicken, mac ‘n cheese, plus some other comfort foods and dressed up accordingly. It was fun!

The weather wasn’t the best on day three, so we spent our time shopping in Oak Bluffs and got lunch there as well. Then we drove around to some of the island’s cemeteries. Our friend Aly had a long-lost relative with a grave on the island and she wanted to find it. The first graveyard we went was very large and we spent a lot of time looking for the grave, but had no luck – although we did find a grave for actor Jim Beluschi! We had better luck at the next cemetery we went to, which was smaller. It was pretty neat that Aly was able to find a family connection to the island since we had been going there for a few years.

In the evening, we went out to Menemsha for dinner. Menemsha is known for having the best sunsets on the island, however, the night we had dinner reservations, of course it was rainy and overcast. We had dinner at The Homeport and it was very good. We did get a little bit of a sunset but nothing like the burner we were hoping for. Either way, we had a good time and would love to go back to The Homeport for dinner again sometime.

On the last day of our trip, we spent the day at the beach before heading back to the house to pack and clean. Seeing the seals bob around on the waves was the highlight of the trip for me. They are so cute! Before our ferry left, we grabbed food at The Black Dog in Vineyard Haven and did some shopping at some of our favorite stores in town.

It was another great trip to Martha’s Vineyard and solidified our love of the island even more. Have you made it to the Vineyard yet?
📍I acknowledge the lands mentioned in this post are the ancestral lands of the Wôpanâak (Wampanoag) and Pokanoket people.
