In the Fall of 2023, Jarrett and I adopted a puppy (Tahoe) from Houston, Texas. He was coming up on a van with some other dogs and we were to meet the van in Brattleboro, Vermont for pick up. The meet up time was midday on a Saturday. I didn’t want to waste a beautiful day not hiking so we found a spot near the pick-up location where we could get a few miles in.

The Wantastiquet Natural Area is in New Hampshire, but it’s right across the river from Vermont. It’s an out and back hike and can be found on AllTrails. This was a pleasant hike up an old quarry road that winds through the forest. It was a beautiful fall day when we went, but the trail itself was damp so footing was slippery in spots. The trail also had a lot of loose rock so it made the descent a little nerve wracking.

At the summit you get some views of Brattleboro and surrounding areas. It’s a nice reward for not a lot of work. The summit is small, but there are some good spots to sit for snacks while checking out the view. If you wanted to add more distance to the hike, there are some other trails that you can add on to this.

🥾 Approximately 3.7 miles round trip
⛰️ Approximate elevation gain of 1,053 feet.
🌲 Easy to Moderate, depending on fitness level
💰 Free
🐕 Dogs allowed
🚽 No bathrooms available at trailhead

Overall, it was an enjoyable hike that we were able to complete in under two hours. We weren’t able to explore the nearby towns but I would be interested to go back and check out downtown Brattleboro – it looks like it has some cute stores and restaurants!
📍I acknowledge the lands mentioned in this post are the ancestral lands of the Wabanaki (Dawnland Confederacy), Pennacook and N’dakina (Abenaki / Abénaquis) people.
