The summer is always jam packed with different trips and activities but one constant is the girls getaway to Martha’s Vineyard. We always start early in the morning, leaving my house at 3:30 a.m. to make sure we make our 6 a.m. ferry on time. Normally the drive is uneventful and easy, however, this year we were hit with torrential rain that made for a pretty terrifying drive first thing in the morning. The rain cleared up when we boarded the ferry but it would linger with us most of our trip.

Our first stop was The Grey Barn and Farm to pick up some breakfast pastries. Their chocolate croissants can’t be beat! We always love seeing the barn cats while we’re here too. Once we made our purchases, we checked into the rental house, got settled in and then hit the beach.

Day two was really cloudy so instead of waiting around for the weather to cooperate for a beach day, we decided we would go to Oak Bluffs. Out of the larger communities on the island, Oak Bluffs is the one we’ve probably spend the least amount of time in so we wanted to get better acquainted with the area. While walking downtown we passed by The Flying Horses, the oldest carousel in the country! Instead of walking by we decided to pop inside to check it out. We were so enamored with it, we decided to actually ride it! It was a lot of fun. Also, if you are a music fan, the band Dispatch has a song called Flying Horses that’s about this ride! We grabbed lunch at Lobsterville Bar & Grille and everyone loved their meals. Some of the girls got lobster grilled cheese sandwiches that they raved about. We popped in some local shops and checked out the famous gingerbread cottages in town. Before heading back to our accommodations, we stopped at one of our favorite places on the island, Nomans, for a drink but got caught in another downpour. We all bought matching hats there though so that was a highlight.

The next day started at the beach with our matching Nomans hats. After a few hours there, we went to Edgartown for lunch and then walked to see the Edgartown Lighthouse, which was so pretty and quintessentially New England.

Our final day was unfortunately very cloudy and dreary again. We went to Aquinnah to see the cliffs and lighthouse, which we’ve done before, however, this time we actually got to go into the lighthouse to check it out. It was so cool! We went to Vineyard Haven afterwards to do some shopping and get ice cream at Mad Martha’s. We also checked out Morning Glory Farms, which was a really large farm stand and store with fresh produce, baked goods, flowers and more.

Out of all the years we’ve been, this was probably the worst weather we’ve had, however, we actually all loved this year because we got to do so many different activities!
📍I acknowledge the lands mentioned in this post are the ancestral lands of the Wôpanâak (Wampanoag) and Pokanoket people.
