Carter enjoying the view of his first vacation

In a previous blog post I wrote about our 2012 road trip to Nags Head, North Carolina. Well, it was such a fun trip that Jarrett’s family wanted us all to go again, so in 2016 we packed up and headed back south. This time however, we had quite a few more people and four dogs in the house. At this point, we’d had our dog Carter for four years so we were really excited to take him on an adventure with us. My sister got to come with us too, so on the drive down Carter snuggled up with her in the backseat. He had the best time digging in the sand, chasing crabs and playing in the waves all week.

We went down in July rather than May this time, meaning the weather was a lot warmer. It was so hot during the day, it was too painful to even walk on the sand – we pretty much stuck by the pool until sunset. We also didn’t do too much exploring – mostly the “kids” (all of us in our twenties and thirties) stayed in the pool day drinking and lounging. Our one big outing of the trip was going to see the wild horses again in Corolla. Seeing the horses up close doesn’t get old. We saw even more this time than we did in 2012!

Each night of the trip different people would be in charge of making dinner for everyone. On Wednesday night, Jarrett’s brother and his girlfriend made tacos and his dad mixed his famous margaritas. What happened next was one of the most vivid memories of vacation. While we were inside eating, a storm was brewing outside. There wasn’t any rain, just strong winds, thunder and lightning. The temperature was still beautiful and warm so we all went outside on the deck with our margaritas ooo-ing and ahh-ing over the impressive flashes of lightning. In the distance over the ocean you could even see some waterspouts forming. The drunken margarita storm is still something we talk about to this day.

Nags Head

I’m not sure if I’ll go back to the Outer Banks but it will always hold a special place in my heart because of the memories made on our two trips there.
